Surfing Langosta

Surfing Playa Langosta is the perfect solution for those who are after some high quality waves in a quiet and non-touristic place. Langosta is located on the north pacific coast of Costa Rica, right next to Marino Las Baulas National Park. As a result, the place is very quiet and rich with wildlife. For instance, you will witness big leatherback turtles and other animals hanging out around the beach all day long.

The Surf

The quality of the surf in Playa Langosta is one of the best you will find during your surf trip to Costa Rica. In fact, the waves here are always bigger then in Tamarindo, and much more challenging as well. Moreover, the combination of the river and the reef creates highly shaped wave, which breaks always at the same spot, and therefore, easy to predict.

Since Langosta is a reef break, it is not recommended for beginners. However, if you are an average surfer and above, you will definitely find great waves at any tide, and also some nice barrels, especially early morning.

When coming to surf Playa Langosta there is no need to worry about the crowds, especially on week days. However, during the weekends it can get a bit busy, but even then, there are enough waves for everybody.

Surf Spots in Playa Langosta

When surfing Playa Langosta you can choose between several different breaks:

Sapo– this spot is located on the north part of the beach, and performs best during big swells and low tide. It breaks over a shallow reef to both right and left sides, and more suitable for advanced surfers.

Racetracks– you will find this spot in front of Barcelo Hotel. This is a fast wave breaking to the right, and works best at mid rising tide.

The River Mouth– this A frame shape wave is breaking right in front of Rio San Francisco. The beauty of this wave is that it is changing all the time and it is very unpredictable. The best time to score it is during mid tide.

The Beach Break– on the south part, where the reef ends, there are some waves breaking over a sandy bottom. However, it is mainly for beginners, the real deal is over the reef.
